Why your clarity comes in waves — and how to stop deciding in the heat of a feeling.
The question that opens it
Why do I feel so sure today and so unsure tomorrow?
If you've ever said a full yes on Monday and wanted to take it all back by Thursday — if your certainty seems to change with some tide you can't see — you might have emotional authority. About half of us do. It's the most common way humans are built to decide, and the most misunderstood.
So let's get it straight, in plain language, through the body — the way I wish someone had explained it to me.
In Human Design, your authority is simply how you are built to make decisions. Emotional authority means your clarity arrives in waves — and there is no truth in the now.
Your emotional wave is always moving: up toward hope and excitement, down toward doubt and melancholy, and through a calm middle where things just look... clear. The feeling you have right now is real, but it isn't the whole truth. It's one point on the wave.
The rule is beautifully simple: never decide at the peak, and never decide in the pit. Ride the wave, let it move, and decide from the calm middle — when the answer looks the same on a good day and a bad one.
This is the whole game. The wave will hand you intense feelings and call them answers. Here's how to tell the difference:
The one question to ask yourself: would this still feel true on the opposite kind of day? If yes — that's clarity. If the answer depends on your mood — that's the wave talking.
Your birth date gives the likely answer — your birth time locks it in for real.
Put your birth date below, and if you know your birth time, add that too. Nothing is stored — your details go to the chart service, get your authority, and are forgotten.
Emotional authority isn't a talent. It's a practice. Here are three body-first ways to begin:
Give every big decision at least one night — longer for the big ones. If it's still a yes after sleep, after a good day and a bad day, you're getting close to clarity. The wave needs time to move; your only job is to give it that time.
Start noticing where you are: am I up high right now, down low, or somewhere in the middle? You don't have to fix the wave — just name it. I'm at a peak, so I wait. I'm in a pit, so I wait. Naming it takes its power to decide for you.
Make the call from the calm middle — when you're neither thrilled nor miserable about it. Neutral doesn't feel exciting. It feels... obvious. Quiet. Boring, even. That's how you know it's real.
Here's the honest part: in a world that rewards fast decisions, waiting can feel like failure. People will pressure you. Just decide! But deciding from the spike is how you end up committed to things your calm self never wanted.
Waiting is the decision-making. The wave is doing its work whether you watch it or not — you'd just rather be watching.

Every human is built to decide one of seven ways. Each has its own guide:
