Splenic Authority · A Field Guide

Is it my spleen,or is it my anxiety?

How to tell instinct from fear — and start trusting the quietest voice in your body.

The question that started everything

I was sitting in a car with my sister-in-law when I asked it out loud: how do I know it's my spleen talking — and not just anxiety?

That one question is what made me go all in on this work. On the Splenic Projector path. On learning to live life through the gut instead of through the noise in my head. It's also the question I hear most from everyone who finds out they have splenic authority.

So let's answer it properly — in plain language, through the body, the way I wish someone had answered it for me.

What splenic authority actually is

In Human Design, your authority is simply how you are built to make decisions. Splenic authority means yours come through instinct — spontaneous, in-the-moment knowing, felt in the body.

The spleen is the oldest awareness system we have. It's the part of you that knows what's healthy for you right now — this food, this person, this turn, this yes, this no. Not tomorrow. Not after you've thought it through. Now.

And it has one defining trait: it whispers once. It doesn't repeat itself. It doesn't argue its case. It says its piece and moves on.

Instinct vs. anxiety: how they feel different

This is the whole game. They're easy to confuse because they both live in the body — but they feel completely different once you know what to notice:

The spleen (instinct)

  • Quiet — almost easy to miss
  • Neutral tone, no drama
  • About right now, not the future
  • No story attached — just a clean hit
  • Body feels settled, clear, calm
  • Says it once and lets go

Anxiety (fear)

  • Loud — impossible to ignore
  • Urgent, pressuring, catastrophic
  • Lives in what if and later
  • Comes with a whole narrative
  • Body feels tight, buzzy, restless
  • Loops, repeats, gets louder

The one question to ask yourself: did it whisper once and move on — or is it looping and getting louder? The whisper is your spleen. The loop is fear.

What's your authority?

Your birth date gives the likely answer — your birth time locks it in for real.

Put your birth date below, and if you know your birth time, add that too. Nothing is stored — your details go to the chart service, get your authority, and are forgotten.

Three ways to start hearing it

Trusting your spleen isn't a talent. It's a practice. Here are three body-first ways to begin:

1

The pause

When something pings in you, stop. Feel your body before your mind starts narrating. The spleen speaks in the half-second before the story begins — the pause is where you catch it.

2

The body check

Ask: where do I feel this? Spleen hits are usually low and quick — a gut-level yes or no, clean and done. Anxiety tends to live higher and buzzier — chest, throat, racing thoughts. Location tells you a lot.

3

The no-chase rule

If you missed the whisper, let it go. Chasing it — replaying, analyzing, trying to get it back — turns instinct into anxiety. The spleen doesn't do encores. Trust that the next whisper will come.

Sometimes it really is anxiety — and that's okay

Here's the honest part: sometimes the loud thing is just fear, and naming it doesn't make it vanish. Learning to hear your spleen doesn't mean you'll never feel anxious again. It means you'll start to know which voice is which — and that's everything.

The seven authorities

Every human is built to decide one of seven ways. Each has its own guide:

Keep walking with it

Reading about the spleen is one thing. Practicing it — in your body, in real moments — is the actual path. Here's where to go next:
